WHAT IS IT?

The eyes are the most important feature of the face, and usually the first to change as we age. Excess skin and fat around the eyes can make you look older, more tired, angry, and generally worse than you feel.

During an upper blepharoplasty, the excess skin and fat is removed to refresh the eyes. During a lower blepharoplasty, the excess fat (or puffiness) is removed. Occasionally skin also needs to be removed.

TYPES OF INCISIONS

For an upper blepharoplasty, the incision is hidden in the natural crease of the upper eyelid and is rarely visible. For a lower blepharoplasty that does not require skin removal, the incision is made inside the eyelid. If skin needs to be excised, the incision is hidden under the eyelashes to prevent visibility.

PROCEDURE

Eyelid surgery is performed with IV sedation and local anesthesia, so you are comfortable and sleepy, and feel no pain. The surgery takes approximately 1.5 hours.

HEALING

Suggested time off work: 7 days

Walking: Walking is started on the same day as surgery

Exercise: Limited exercise at 1 week, full exercise at 2 weeks

Other: Ice or frozen peas are used around the eyes for the first 48 hours; a single stitch is removed one week after surgery
